Your Data Should Always Be Your Data

We Fight to Keep You Safe

We hear it often in the media these days: your data is for sale. Sadly, a lot of these reports are not wrong. If you were to read through a handful of the Terms and Conditions for most of the services, software, products, and even amusement parks you provided consent to, you might find a clause that states, in rather obscure terms, that yes, in fact, your data is for sale. That's a shame really. Your data should always be your data.

At ClassRelay we had a choice very early on in how we would proceed with earning the necessary capital to keep the business viable. On the one hand we had the tried and true method of gathering as much user data as we could get our hands on in order to then sell it to a third party. That third party would pay us, but then you, the educator, would not need to pay us. While that system may prove fruitful in many different industries, in education, and in your classroom, we could not justify making that compromise.

Everything that we have created for ClassRelay has been made with security and privacy in mind. There are no extrenuous toolkits, libraries, frameworks, or plugins at play, and there are no invasive ads served with the purpose of tracking your movement across sites, nor storing up information about your sessions. In fact, the cookies we hand you are vital to your use of the app, but do nothing to increase our profit margins. We like it that way. We like knowing that your students' data is safe. We like knowing that your data is safe. We like being HIPPA and COPPA compliant. We like not having to worry about how someone, someday, might take data sold to them and do things we wouldn't approve of. We like being able to talk to you honestly, and openly, about how our business model is not built on our ability to sell your user profile to the highest bidder.

We know that in choosing to keep you safe from third party advertisers we also chose to have to ask for payment for our premium services. We know, that in some instances, educators would rather sell their data than pay our monthly subscription (which only rises to $3/month at the time of this article's writing). We know that, maybe, the overall money ClassRelay could make year over year is lower because we refuse to sell our users' data. Still, we prefer it this way.

We plan to continue offering the free version of ClassRelay for free being supported only with non-tracking ads that we hand-select. We plan to continue to safeguard your data. We plan to always put your classroom's safety before our profits, because ClassRelay is about serving educators. If you ever want to chat about how we keep you safe, feel free to reach out, we love talking to our users about the home we've made for them.
